More Images from The First Square Mile - "Sabine Street" (No 2)
This square mile is loaded with look-sees. Part 2 of "The First Square Mile."
This is a quick and mainly visual post. Picking up from the previous post, The First Square Mile, we find ourselves in the “interesting homes” area. (A rough reference map is posted further below.)
The ‘interesting homes’ area is relatively modest by default and nothing if not colorful. Some of the streets and sidewalks are brick, exuding the passage of time.
I stopped immediately when I saw this trio of homes. I framed, manually focused and snapped the image. I love the selected colors, the pop of red on the mailbox and a long-haired Jason in the window. Anyone know if that’s actually Jason?
I then decided to take another image and just as I did, a woman with a dog opened the door. Awkward! “Sorry,” I tried to explain. “I saw the colors and…” She seemed totally fine with it but I wanted to respect her privacy. Anyway, there are lots of old home there and many that are pristine, like the one below, captured at day’s end.
I find the next image to be a tremendous juxtaposition of architecture, purpose and color. It’s located off Washington Avenue.
A stone’s throw from there, you’ll see this…
Excuse me but there aren’t many places in America where the utility meter is situated on the street quite like a parking meter! The mural is beautifully executed and trippy, and a wonderful splash of color for the block. The artist, Alex Arzu, shares a video of his process on Instagram. Watch here!
Another artist, Jasmine Zelaya, did this fantastic work…

I’ve previously noted the area is in walking distance of downtown. Here’s the map and a few more pops of color.

And here’s one more juxtaposition of renewal.
I love how folks are improving homes and/or making unsightly things fascinating. It’s a never-ending process. If making things better is your thing or making things better by sticking to honest work and good values is your thing, don’t give up and don’t give in.
One square mile. Easily understood. You walk a mile, turn left, walk a mile and turn left, walk a mile and turn left, and then walk another mile right back to where you began.
